Here's the number one reason why most people that dream of owning their own business don't ever realize that dream: F-E-A-R
Americans dream about owning a business. 56% of recent survey respondents said that was their great ambition in life. Yet very few ever see that dream materialize.
Most of us work for someone else from our mid twenties until our mid sixties. That's 40 years of our lives, roughly 83,000 hours.
Bruce Judson reports that a Gallup survey of over 1 million U.S. employees found that over 70% are disengaged from their jobs. They have no real commitment to their work or their company. 70%!
You see the rub, don't you? Many want to own a business, yet very few ever do. They instead work for 40 years for someone else in a job they aren't committed to.
Why don't we follow our dreams and create our own future?
We are afraid . . . afraid of failing . . . afraid of not getting our bi-weekly paycheck . . . afraid of losing our company health insurance . . . afraid of having no 401K . . . afraid of the unknown.
Fear stops strong men dead in their tracks.
Francis Bacon, the English philosopher, said, "It is a miserable state of mind to have few things to desire and many things to fear."
Yes, there are many things to fear when leaving the corporate slavery ring (workforce) and entering the solo business world.
If you sit down and make a list of everything that could go wrong or turn out bad in a new business, you'll be surprised at just how long the list can be.
But man was not made to be afraid.
"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." II Timothy 1:7
Fear can be overcome, conquered, and dispelled.
How you meet and overcome your own fears will be a personal challenge and a great triumph.
It seems that most of those who are successful in overcoming their fears find the power deep within themselves to meet their fears head on.
Often, the solution seems to be that the entrepreneur sets himself in motion. He begins thinking about and working on his business and develops traction, motion, torque!
Focused and persistent action generates personal power.
The business owner grows in confidence about his own ability as he moves methodically forward, one step after the other, time and time again.
Sometimes the hardest part of the journey is finding the courage to take the first step . . . and then the second . . . and then the third . . .
