I know, I know, we all use the term freely and without much thought.
But it really is wrong. A virtual business can't have assets, employees, products and customers.
The term "virtual" means a realistic simulation; of such effect that something appears to be real even though it's not.
Well let me tell you, Internet business is the real thing. It is a different kind of business because of the way it's operated and delivered; but it is as real, legal, and legitimate as any other physical business.
And while we're on the subject, I'll tell you that there really is no such thing as an Internet business either. You might want to read that again and think about it.
You, I, and the next guy talk about "Internet business" as though it were a tangible, unique thing, a totally different way of doing business.
I suppose the closest thing to a true Internet business is a web hosting company.
What we're really meaning though, is that Internet business is a special business operating model based upon using the digital delivery capability of the Internet to conduct our marketing, selling, product delivery and financial transaction exchanges.
In other words, regardless of the service or product we sell, it is "Internet business" because we operate it digitally over the World Wide Web, not for any other reason.
The Internet is a tool, a resource, a vehicle for operating the business.
Business conducted on the Internet is the perfect business, in my opinion, but there is a small bit of “fine print” or an asterisk attached!
You see, not all Internet businesses are created equal.
For example, groceries, books, cars, pianos, and even sailboats are all currently being sold online (along with every other conceivable product and service you can imagine.)
But in most instances, the Internet for these physical products is a means of advertising, selling, and transacting payment only.
There is still a physical good or product that has to be delivered to the customer that requires bookkeeping, packaging, tracking, trips to the post office, and mailing expense . . . well, you get the picture.
That delivery involves someone’s time, stored inventory (in most cases), and the physical labor of preparing and sending.
These business operations are performed by either the owner or her employees who want to be paid a salary and want to have a roof over their head while they work . . . can you imagine the audacity?
There is a “more” perfect business however.
It is the Internet business of selling digital information.
