"Where to find more sales: refine the purchasing process."

Have you ever considered fine-tuning your sales process as a method of increasing sales?Often, new business owners figure the only way to increase sales is to put your product or service in front of more people.

Such a strategy usually means that you spend increasing amounts of money on advertising so you extend your reach in to more and more markets.

Increasing sales by ramping up advertising is one way to pump up the bottom line.  But there may be other more effective uses of your business operating budget.

Have you ever considered fine-tuning your sales process as a method of increasing sales?  You may be actually losing sales because your customers are confused or hindered in some way about how to buy your products.

Your sales process in online business can be monitored and evaluated in many ways.  The first analysis that should be done is to review your web stats and understand the real picture of what's happening during customer purchase, checkout, and payment processing.

If you take the time to study web analytics, you will soon realize that online business has a great advantage over offline business.

You can track statistics like how much traffic your site is getting, where it's coming from, how visitors move from one page of your site to the next, which areas of your site are the most popular, and where in the buying process some customers are leaving before finalizing the purchase.

There is nothing comparable to this type of information available in a traditional physical store.

Once you have the stats from your web site, you can begin to compare one campaign against another and test varying methods of advertising, places you market, and even ad copy to understand which options are generating the highest sales.

You may learn that a high proportion of lost sales are occurring at the same spot in the sales process - telling you that something is wrong on a particular page.  It could be that your navigation is confusing or your call to action is not strong enough.

You may find that you just aren't getting many visitors to your site.  In that case, you can look at ways to drive more traffic and strategies to let more people hear your story.  It could be that your niche is not segmented enough or that you're trying to compete in an over-saturated market.

The sales process includes everything from advertising to targeting the right customers, to pitching your products and ushering your customers through the checkout process on your site.

Fine-tuning your sales process means you evaluate each and every step and part of the process to see if it's working properly and to determine if there are better, more efficient ways to accomplish the task.

You will be reviewing your marketing, your web site usability, navigation, and security.  In addition, you will want to check your web site sales copy, your product's appropriateness for the target market, your sales call to action (request to buy), and the whole financial checkout system. 

If you are able to modify and refine your sales process so that you end up making more sales for the same amount of marketing expense and effort, you will increase your profit just as surely as if you were adding more advertising and making additional new first time sales.

But remember, squeezing more sales out of the purchasing process is usually preferable to dropping more and more big bucks to extend your advertising reach.
